Before we go on…Happy Diwali to all those celebrating out
there…
This festival will remind all of us to the crunchy snack
called murukku. Well the name itself is from Tamil, which means twist. Originated
from India, murukku is well known even in Malaysia, Singapore and in many parts
of the world with high Indian population.
Murukku is made from rice flour and urad dal flour. There are people who prefer to buy readily
packed flour with all the ingredients in correct proportions and just left for
us to make the dough and fry, although there are people who opt to make their
own flour by grinding with grinding stone which according to them, makes the
murukku even tastier.
Well, murukku is made by making dough with the rice flour,
urad dal flour, salt, water and sesame seeds or cumin seeds. This dough is
later on made into many shapes, normally spiral, by hand or mould and then deep
fried in oil till it appears golden brown as can be seen above.
Apart from oily due to deep
frying, cumin seeds in murukku has been said to contain medicinal values. So, let’s
grab some for tea now...
